Welcome to Utah!

The International Center conducts an orientation program for all international students prior to the beginning of each term. All undergraduate, graduate and transfer students are REQUIRED to attend international student orientation as part of your check-in procedure. For most graduate and doctoral students, your respective department will offer an orientation for you, but you will still need to attend the orientation offered by the International Center. If you are coming to the International Teaching Assistant Program sessions on August 12, the International Center will be conducting an orientation on the first day of the ITA Workshop. Do not sign up for both orientations! For questions regarding the ITA Program see: http://www.utah.edu/ita or email: diane.cotsonas@gradschool.utah.edu

Academic Advising and ESL Writing Placement Exam

As part of orientation, new undergraduate and transfer students will get a chance to ask an advisor questions and register for classes. You should register for classes once you speak with your departmental advisor. All undergraduate ESL international students must take this Writing Placement Exam. ESL students have the option of taking the ESL 1050 & 1060 combination as an alternative to Writing 2010.  The ESL Placement Exam Essay is used to see if a student is ready to take these two courses, or if they need to take ESL 1040 first.  The test is 45 minutes in length and students will be asked to write an answer to a proposed question. It is advisable to get the exam completed as soon as you arrive so that you can take the required writing course in your first semester.

The essay evaluators take into consideration such things as cohesion, expression, organization, and grammar.

You can take the test at Orientation on August 21st at 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Saltair Room.

Addition Testing Day: Friday, Aug. 22
Building: LNCO Room 2945
11:00am - 12:00 noon

Please email: kate.lythgoe@linguistics.utah.edu to pre-register for the Friday test.

You may also take the Writing Placement Exam at the Testing Center. Students will need to sign up to take the exam at the Testing Center on campus.  The test is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but you need to register first.

Graduate students should contact their academic department for advising questions.
